There’s Some Hope in Detroit

Currently, the Drive have gotten off to a hot start to the new season with a 4-2 record. On Monday, November 18th Detroit’s #15 overall draft pick in the 2019 draft put on a show for the Drive and Pistons fans. He totaled twenty eight points on 10 of 16 shooting while sinking four three pointers.

Due to Doumbouya’s hot start in the G-league it has Pistons fans wondering when he will make his debut with the struggling 4-10 Piston’s team. Fans have to remember that Doumbouya was taken as a developing project. He stands 6’8 with plenty of athleticism and only eighteen years old. Therefore, in this case Detroit should see no reason to rush such a raw talent into the quickly paced NBA so soon.

Another player making an impact with his opportunity for the Drive is Jordan Bone. Detroit picked Bone with the #57th overall draft pick in 2019. Hoping he would make a name for himself in the summer league and make the team. In three games for the summer league team he averaged 12.33 points per game, but in final game of the summer he lead the way with 18 points. In Bone’s first five games as a member of the Drive he averaged 20.4 points a game and 8.8 assists. It’s safe to say that so far Bone is making the most of his opportunity.

Even with the Pistons struggling mightily there’s definitely some positives to season. It’s unclear whether Detroit will call for reinforcements soon, or let the youngsters keep dominating their competition with the Drive. At this point in the season many Piston’s fans have turned their attention to the future. Although judging from the Drive’s start it’s safe to say one thing the Detroit faithful doesn’t have to worry about is the production from the 2019 draft picks in Grand Rapids.

What to take from the loss versus the Bulls

Via DBB

Last night the Detroit Pistons lost to the Chicago Bulls 89-109. It was a really bad game for the Pistons, to say the least. Nothing looked good last night, whether it was offense or defense.

No one could get it going on the offensive end. The Pistons again struggled with turnovers, turning the ball over 16 times. Andre drummond struggled with only 6 points and 14 rebounds. A very frustrated Andre even fouled out with 6 minutes to play in the game. Blake Griffin played a very painful 30 minutes and scored 16 points. It is very clear that Blake is not fully healthy on the court right now. He has no lift, quickness, and he honestly doesn’t even look like he wants to be on the court at all. Derrick Rose was the only bright spot of this game, scoring 18 points in 24 minutes of action. He, once again, received a standing ovation from his hometown crowd.

The Pistons defense virtually couldn’t stop any of the Bulls. Lauri Markkanen scored 24 points, getting fouled on multiple three point attempts. Shaq Harrison and Tomas Satoransky both put up 15 points each. Not to mention the Bulls were playing without their starting forward, Otto Porter Jr. It was a very poor effort on defense for the Pistons. They also had 4 off-days to prepare their defense for this game, and still couldn’t pull it off. Until they figure out their defensive issues, the losses will keep piling up.

What’s Next?

First off, Blake Griffin needs to get completely healthy. There is no point of having him on the court when he is in this condition. It is no help to the team, it is actually a disadvantage. Tonight, we played better when Blake was off the floor and the Derrick Rose was on. Also, hopefully Tony Snell’s injury doesn’t keep him out and extended amount of time. Hopefully after Reggie Jackson returns, the injury bug stays away from Detroit.

There are currently two sides to what this team should do. Side one, blow this team up and tank for the upcoming draft. Side two, keep plugging along with the “win now” mentality and hope the Pistons miraculously turn around. In order for that turn around to happen, it would have to be quick. The Pistons have already lost a handful of games to rebuilding teams, which isn’t very promising. Reggie Jackson is still out for another two weeks at minimum. And the rest just depends on whether the rest of the team can stay healthy for the long haul. If they were to blow it up, that would most likely mean trading Andre and/or Blake. That would ensure that the Pistons get back young assets and draft picks. Another player that could be moved before the trade deadline is Langston Galloway. He has been playing up to his contest this year, so i’m sure multiple contenders could be in the market for a pure shooter.

Below, Eli Bashi(@EliBashiNBA) uses equation/picture to display what the Pistons should do as an organization.

Pistons fans are very divided about this topic. All we can do is sit back and let the front office pull the strings and decide what to do with this struggling team. Hopefully they can turn it around because i’m not ready for a 2-5 year rebuild. The Pistons next game is Friday at home against the 4-10 Atlanta Hawks, another rebuilding team. Let’s hope for a Pistons victory.

Pistons lose at the Bulls 89-109

Wow. For the Pistons, tonight could not have gone any worse.

The rust was evident early, coming off a stretch of rest the Pistons opened the game sloppy as could be. Turnovers were all over the floor and that left them down 13 early, 6-19 with 6:20 remaining in the first quarter. D-Rose checked into the game to an expected standing ovation and that seemed to spark the team, as they then went on a 24-8 run to grab the lead at 30-27 with 45 seconds left in the first.

However, things went downhill following that tremendous run and as things always seem to with the Pistons, their play spiraled and got out of control. Although they only trailed by four at halftime, that deficit continued to grow as the clock winded down. The team had only scored seven points in the third quarter with 4:36 remaining, and that theme was consistent as they finished the quarter only shooting 15% in those 12 minutes of play and down 13. Their offense didn’t get much better in the fourth, in case there was any doubt. It looked most out of sync when Blake passed up a wide open three for a contested Christian Wood shot from the left wing. The defense was less than good, the offense was flat out bad, and the ball security was once again a major problem. Cook all that up and what pops out? Another Pistons loss.

The Pistons looked really awful yet again tonight, to a rebuilding Chicago team I might add. Reggie is still out, Blake is not completely back and Pistons did look a little rusty early, but that does not excuse a 20 point loss after having four days to prepare for this game. The Pistons are skidding, and the panic button is in sight; if this play continues, the team just may be forced to press it.

The Pistons next game comes Friday, November 22, against the Hawks at home. At this point every game is a must win, or the time to ‘blow it up’ may have arrived.

Pistons vs Bulls Preview

Via NBA

Tonight, the Detroit Pistons(4-9) take on the Chicago Bulls(4-10) at 8:00 p.m. Both teams are just 3-7 in their last 10 games.

The Pistons played the Bulls on November 1st at the United Center. Andre Drummond has a huge game with 25 points and 24 rebounds. Derrick Rose also had a big game off the bench with 23 points and 7 assists. Chicago’s starting wings, Zach Levine and Otto Porter Jr, were pretty much unguardable as they combined for 48 points. another thing to remember, is that the Pistons played that game without Blake Griffin. Griffin has recently returned to the lineup, even though he’s still yet to find his rhythm.

Stopping The Skid

The Detroit Pistons are currently on a 4 game losing streak. This is a totally winnable game. Last game, against Charlotte, the Pistons committed 21 turnovers. In order for them to stop this losing streak, they will have to limit the turnovers. Also, they will have to be patient and find the open man. Lastly, they will have to step up and play defense. That is one thing that this years team has struggled with.

What would a potential Pistons rebuild look like?

Photo Via Sports Illustrated

The Detroit Pistons are 4-9 and have lost the last four games. Why? well it could be because they are without their starting point guard, and, Blake Griffin is just getting back into the swing of things, or it could be that they’re bad. Very. Very. Bad. Is it too early to pull the plug? Yes. Should they be thinking about it if this continues? Absolutely. But whether you think the Pistons should rebuild or not, this article is about showing what a potential Pistons rebuild would look like.

The Staff Situation

First and foremost, they would need to figure out who coaches and manages this team. General Manager should be easy as they have been grooming Malik Rose for two years. He is only 44 and seems to have his best days ahead of him. But on the other hand you’ve got the coach which is a harder decision. Although Dwane Casey seem like the kind of coach you would want to coach young players, he is 62 which doesn’t seem to be an ideal pairing with a young gm. But if you remember when the Pistons hired Casey it had come down to either him or Ime Udoka, the former Gregg Popovich assistant who is now in Philly.
It seems as though it would be a wise to bring in Udoka for a nice, young, GM and coach pairing.

The Blake Trade

Photo via arabnews.pk

Now for the good stuff, Trades. In any Pistons rebuild Blake Griffin would certainly be traded, and the most rumored team seems to be the Portland Trailblazers. Below is a potential trade that would send Blake Griffin to Rip City.

TRADE
Pistons get: Hassan Whiteside, Anfernee Simons, Nassir Little, 2020 FRP

Blazers get: Blake Griffin

This trade should be an easy deal for the Pistons, the only question is, Do the Blazers want to forfeit their future to become a championship contender? This trade would almost certainly come after Nurkic gets back and that would give them a Lillard, McCollum, Griffin, and Nurkic starting lineup. That is a legit championship contender. Meanwhile the Pistons get an expiring Whiteside contract and quality young pieces to pair with Brown Kennard and Doumboya.

The Drummond Trade

Photo Via theday.com

This one is much more debatable. Some think we should keep him, some say the exact opposite. But a 26 year old Drummond is probably 2-3 years late. As far as trades go, there isn’t a team rumored to be interested. The Hornets were, two years ago, but they were working on keeping Kemba Walker. That being said, there are many teams who would love to have a center of Drumond’s caliber on their team. Specifically the Boston Celtics who have lacked a true starting center for years.

TRADE
Pistons get: Gordon Hayward, Robert Williams, Carsen Edwards, 2020 FRP, 2022 FRP

Celtics get: Andre Drummond, Langston Galloway

For the Celtics they get a young always healthy Drummond (even though Hayward was doing good he just broke his and and is not dependable) and a player every team trying to compete for a championship would love in Langston Galloway. This pairs with their already stellar lineup of Kemba\Jaylen\Tatum and gives them a true center down low. Meanwhile the pistons get another center on the roster to save us from watching Thon Maker and Carsen Edwards who has had his moments also two FRP that would likely be late round picks.

What Then?

So what else would need to be done? Well it depends on if players like Derrick Rose and Markeiff Morris would want to play for a rebuilding team. If not, buying them out or maybe, for Derrick, getting something small in return would be the likely path. But besides that, all they would need to do is make sure they build around their young guys like Luke Kennard and Sekou Doumboya.

The Langston Galloway Conundrum

Before the start of the 2019-20 NBA season, if you would have asked any Pistons fan what they thought the team should do with Langston Galloway, most would have said the same thing. Trade him. He is not very valuable to the team.

Fast forward a month. Langston Galloway is now finding himself in a role many would have never seen coming. Galloway is playing like a legitimate sixth man. Averaging 13.2 points per game on 45.6% from the field and 46.2% from three, Galloway now presents a major problem for opposing teams. Galloway seems to be fitting in nicely with the Pistons’ second unit, and shows no signs of slowing down.

That’s the great part. Now for the two options.

Stay Put (Contending):

If the Pistons figure things out under the guidance of Dwane Casey, there is no reason to move Galloway. A veteran presence off the bench, Langston provides the leadership the club needs. On top of this, he also is a lights-out shooter from distance. With much improved defense, Galloway seems to be the Danny Green-esque bench piece the Pistons sorely need. In this scenario, the Pistons would likely give more minutes to Langston than he usually gets.

Trade (Selling):

If a quick turnaround does not take place, the Pistons do not look like a playoff contender this year as they are starting off the year with a meager 4-9 record. With talks of an imminent teardown swirling, Langston finds himself to be in an interesting situation: trade bait. Plenty of title contenders could use a player like Langston, and the Pistons could/should trade him for the right price. Let’s Break down potential trades.

Trade 1: Galloway to the Lakers

Lakers Get: Langston Galloway

Pistons Get: Avery Bradley, 2023 2nd Round Pick

In this trade, the Lakers would be looking for a bench upgrade by trading a struggling 3 and D player and a second round pick for Galloway. Galloway would provide the Lakers with the bench depth they need so they could space the floor better in their second unit. The Pistons would get a reunion with Avery Bradley, who has a lesser contract, along with a 2nd round pick.

Trade 2: Galloway to the Clippers

Clippers get: Langston Galloway, 2021 2nd Round Pick (via LA Lakers), 2026 2nd Round Pick

Pistons get: Rodney McGruder, Jerome Robinson

In this scenario, the Clippers acquire Galloway and two 2nd Round picks for veteran Rodney McGruder, and a young scoring talent in Jerome Robinson. This trade makes sense for both teams, as the Clippers need someone who can play defense next to Lou Williams off the bench, while being a consistent threat from outside. Galloway brings this. The Pistons do not leave empty handed, however, as Jerome Robinson is an all-around scoring talent who can be groomed by Dwane Casey.

No matter what happens, tanking or contending, Langston Galloway is a nice asset that the front office is lucky to have. If they tank, they can get a nice young piece back. If they choose not to tank, they have a nice scoring option off the bench. The Pistons have a dilemma, but this dilemma is one all front offices would love to have.

Young Pistons: The Future is Bright in the Motor City

Every Detroit Pistons fan is weary of the NBA Draft. The event held every year in June is often a pivotal day where many teams hit the jackpot, get a solid player, or strike out and hit a bust. The Detroit Pistons have had their ups and downs in the draft for the last 20 years, but they seem to be on the right track with their recent selections and trades for young pieces.

In fact, recent draft picks like Andre Drummond (26) and Luke Kennard (23) have proceeded to make themselves household names in every Pistons fan’s household for their contributions to the team. Other notable young Pistons such as Bruce Brown (23), Christian Wood (24), and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk (22) have already cemented places in the rotation, and new 2019 draft pick Sekou Doumbouya (18) is just getting started. In this article, I break down the upside of each young player mentioned above and analyze what it could mean for the team.

Andre Drummond:

2019-20 stats: 34.5 MPG, 19.9 PPG, 16.8 RPG, 3.1 APG, 55.7% FG, 0.0% 3PT, 69.4% FT, 1.6 SPG, 2.0 BPG, 25.0 PER

Andre Drummond has been by far the best player on the Pistons to this point in the very young NBA season. With multiple 20/20 games in the young season, he is surely making his case for a well deserved maximum contract whether it be from the Pistons, or another team willing to spend the money to get one of the league’s top talents at the Center position, rivaling talents such as Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic, and Karl-Anthony Towns. In his 8th season now, Drummond figures to lie among the top rebounders of all time. There is no reason for Pistons fans to believe Drummond will cool off this season due to his dominant play through the first month of the season.

Luke Kennard:

2019-20 stats: 33.7 MPG, 18.9 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 4.2 APG, 45.4% FG, 41.4% 3PT, 87.8% FT, 0.4 SPG, 0.1 BPG, 17.6 PER

Luke Kennard is one of the most important pieces on the Pistons so far this year. The 3rd year Shooting Guard is averaging 18.9 points per game, while also being a strong candidate for the NBA’s Most Improved Player award. When he was drafted in the 1st round of the 2017 NBA Draft out of Duke, Pistons fans knew Kennard would be an excellent 3 point shooter, having shot 38.3% from distance over his career at Duke. Luke held up his reputation as a three point shooter his first two seasons, while exploding this year for an incredible 41.4% from downtown, while expanding his game to take on an additional role as a playmaker, in which he has flourished. This year, Luke has doubled his previous assist output, while also taking more shots per game, and making 3.0 shots from three point range this year.

Bruce Brown:

2019-20 stats: 26.9 MPG, 7.3 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 3.3 APG, 38.4% FG, 29.4% 3PT, 59.3% FT, 0.9 SPG, 0.4 BPG, 6.8 PER

Bruce Brown, the 42nd pick of the 2018 NBA Draft, has been a key contributor to this year’s Pistons as well. Brown’s rookie year, which saw him start 56 games, was an encouraging sight for the front office. Known primarily as a defender, Brown has made significant strides to becoming a bigger part of the offense, improving his points output by 3.0 PPG, while also not being afraid to take more shots. While temporary, Brown has played the Point Guard position to good results, showing maturity as a ball-handler and playmaker. Brown’s versatility means a lot to a team that relies on him to often guard the opposing team’s offensive threats, as he can guard most players. Brown is also showing encouraging results by shooting with greater efficiency from downtown. This trend should get better with experience, and there is a lot to like about his offensive game, especially with practice.

Christian Wood:

2019-20 stats: 15.8 MPG, 8.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 0.3 APG, 60.0% FG, 52.9% 3PT, 63.0% FT, 0.3 SPG, 0.8 BPG, 21.4 PER

Christian Wood was a fan favorite for many Pistons fans coming into training camp. The 4th year Center had really started to get it going in a limited time with the New Orleans Pelicans last year, averaging 16.9 PPG in a small sample size of 8 games. So far this year, this energy brought to the table from the big man has not faltered, and Wood has cracked the rotation, while scoring 8.6 PPG while only seeing the floor for 15.8 MPG. Shooting-wise, fans can not expect Wood to keep shooting 52.9% from 3 point range, but they can expect a high energy big man which provides a much needed spark from off the bench. Wood has lots of upside, and he showed this throughout training camp and the preseason, impressing Head Coach Dwane Casey, and taking the final roster spot, while also cracking the rotation. There is a lot to like about Wood, and we have only seen a fraction of his exciting upside thus far.

Svi Mykhailiuk:

2019-20 stats: 13.3 MPG, 4.4 PPG, 1.3 RPG, 1.1 APG, 43.5% FG, 52.9% 3PT, 100.0% FT, 0 SPG, 7.4 PER

Brought over via trade with the Lakers, Svi Mykhailiuk is a deadly 3 point shooter. Often known for making endless amounts of 3 point shots at the gym, the sharpshooter has taken his efficiency and translated it to his shots during his playing time, shooting 52.9% from deep. While defense is a concern, there is plenty of upside when it comes to what Svi can do. The Ukrainian swingman is also an able ball-handler and distributer when given the chance, and with defensive work, can become a premier 3 and D player. This type of player is exactly what the Pistons need, and to have the luxury of having a deadly three point shooter is something Pistons fans can look forward to seeing on the court.

Sekou Doumbouya:

2019-20 G-League Stats: 21.5 MPG, 15.0 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 1.3 AST, 53.5% FG, 36.8% 3PT, 100.0% FT, 1.0 SPG

Sekou is a very young player with seemingly endless upside. When talking about Sekou, all his potential makes him the steal of the entire draft… and he was drafted 15th. Sekou has unreal athleticism, and is very versatile on both ends of the floor. Though inconsistent, his jumpshot is trending up as evidenced by shooting 36.8% from distance in limited G-League action. Sekou will be a very good defender with time, he just needs to shake off some of the inconsistencies that come with inexperience. The young Frenchman should be a staple of the Pistons for years to come, and everybody is excited to see what he can do.

Takeaways:

This recent success with young players’ development has Pistons fans everywhere excited, and rightfully so. The best is still yet to come, and after a bad outcome in the 2019 Playoffs, the Pistons have developed lots of young talent, and many of the young players mentioned above are making their name known throughout the league in different ways. They each have many strengths that provide seemingly endless upside and value to the team, and the future seems to be looking up for each of these players’ futures with the team, and along their careers.

Pistons lose a tight game with the Hornets 106-109

For the Pistons, tonight was a must win game. With Blake and D-Rose back in the lineup against a not so great Charlotte team, no disrespect to them, tonight’s game was a great opportunity to get this team back on track. Instead it turned into a nightmare for most fans.

The night started out hopeful, as the Pistons started the game hot from the field and from three. They had a 14 point lead heading into halftime, Langston had 15 on 5/7 shooting (3/5 from three), and D-Rose had 11. Everything sadly went downhill from there.

Pitiful interior defense and turnovers is what erased their 14 point lead by the end of the third. Frustrations were noticeably growing midway through the fourth when the Pistons faced their largest deficit, 8 points, with 6:26 left in the game. Credit to the Pistons though as they fought back with countless threes from Langston Galloway, who finished the game with his career high 32 points (7/11 from three), and another added from Luke Kennard that would earn them the lead with 50 seconds left. Marvin Williams would then get a wide open corner look with 22.5 seconds remaining to tie the game after Drummond left him to double a guard in the paint.

The Pistons were set up to win this game. No shot clock, no rush was needed. However D-Rose, after playing well for the majority of the game, would drive into the lane and get into the air with nowhere to go, eventually forcing himself to throw the ball out of bounds. This would earn the Pistons their 21st turnover of the game and the Hornets the ball back with just one second on the clock. Malik Monk delivers for the Hornets exactly what every Pistons fan feared, an incredibly contested three from the top of the key as time expires. Hornets win 109-106.

Blake didn’t play a good game, Andre seemed a bit disengaged most of the night, and the Pistons missed a great opportunity to get their season back on track. “Special K” himself, a.k.a Pistons commentator Greg Kelser, had the quote of the night: “I’m drained.” Probably how just about every Pistons fan is feeling after that performance.

The team’s next opportunity comes next Wednesday, 11/20, against the Bulls.

Game Preview: Pistons vs Hornets

Tonight the Detroit Pistons(4-8) take on the Charlotte Hornets(4-7) for the first time this regular season. This is a very winnable game for the Pistons, and I’d say it’s a must win. It’s only twelve games in, and most fans are already losing hope on this team.

Game Infirmation

Key Notes/Injury Report

  • Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose are both active for this game. Although they will likely still be on a minute restriction around 24-28 minutes.
  • Tony Snell is listed as probable, with Reggie Jackson and Khyri Thomas both listed as out. Jordan Bone and Sekou Doumbouya are both currently with the Grand Rapids Drive.
  • Charlotte lost Kemba Walker, Jeremy Lamb, and Frank Kaminsky in free agency.
  • The Hornets gained Terry Rozier in the off-season. In his first year as a full-time point guard, he is averaging career highs in both three point percentage(38.2%) and field goal percentage(41.7%). Rozier is a small, quick guard, who you can’t let heat up.

Extras

The Pistons have had two days off, while the Hornets had just one. Hopefully that time gave the team time to rest and figure out their defensive issues. The Charlotte Hornets are averaging 110 points per game, so hopefully the Pistons can hold them under 100. After today, the Pistons don’t play again until next Wednesday.

Pistons vs Heat Recap

Welp. Umm. Okay.

The Pistons lose to Miami 108-117. This wasn’t pretty. You know what else wasn’t pretty? The flight from Detroit to Miami. The plane didn’t get in until 6am today, which means the entire team lost a bunch of sleep and had to play a game tonight right after a very intense Minnesota game last night.

Goran Dragic looked like an MVP. Kelly Olynyk was a Piston-killer. Jimmy Butler was annoying, but he usually is anyway. Chris Silva (who?) was dunking multiple times.

One good thing about the Pistons: Christian Wood. Apparently Dwane Casey heard the fans’ cries and gave Wood some adequate minutes. Luke and Dre started cooking in the second half. The whole team looked gassed, what can I say? Detroit did have a really nice rally in the 4th quarter, but it was not enough to escape a rested and healthy Miami team.
